When you sell your Android phone, a simple factory reset might not be enough to protect your privacy. Modern data recovery tools can sometimes "undelete" files. Follow this guide to ensure your data stays yours.
1. Back Up Everything
Before you do anything, ensure your photos are in Google Photos and your settings are backed up to Google Drive. Check individual apps like WhatsApp for their own backup settings.
2. Decouple Your Accounts
Manually sign out of:
- Google Account (Critical: Removes Factory Reset Protection)
- Samsung/Brand accounts
- Banking apps
- Social media
3. Encrypt Your Data
If your phone is older (Android 5.0 or earlier), you should manually encrypt the phone before resetting. Most modern phones (Android 6.0+) are encrypted by default, but it's worth checking in Settings > Security.
4. The Factory Reset
Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). This is the standard way to clear your device.
5. The "Overwrite" Method (For Extra Security)
If you're paranoid, after the reset, set the phone up without a Google account, record hours of "junk" video of a wall until the storage is full, and then factory reset again. This overwrites your old data with meaningless video files.
6. Remove SIM and MicroSD Cards
It sounds obvious, but thousands of people leave their SIM cards or SD cards in the phone. Always double-check the tray!
